Completed in 2022, 'Cloud Cleaner' places a figure within an abstract context that invites allegorical reading. The title suggests a figure engaged in an impossible or mythological task — clearing the sky — which positions the work in proximity to themes of labor, futility, or elemental control found in both Nordic and Japanese mythological traditions. Mokuhanga's capacity for tonal gradation through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) makes it well suited to rendering cloud formations and atmospheric transitions, and the figure within such a field would be rendered in contrast to the surrounding luminous ground. Moilanen's late work shows sustained interest in figures operating within or against natural forces, and this print continues that thread with an image that resists easy narrative resolution, using the figure as a formal counterpoint to the indeterminate, shifting mass of cloud.
