The Yoshiwara pleasure quarter's teahouses and green rooms (hikite-jaya) were important social spaces where patrons waited to meet courtesans, and the second-floor rooms of establishments like the Kadoebiya offered elevated views over the busy Shin-Yoshiwara grounds. Kuniyoshi depicts the interior scene — geisha, attendants, and possibly a courtesan in elaborate dress — with the sharp observational eye he brought to all genre subjects. The print provides a rare intimate glimpse into the Yoshiwara's less-depicted back spaces beyond the street-level processions.
