This pentaptych — a five-panel composition, a relatively rare format — stretches across nearly a meter of printed paper to evoke the vast tidal flats exposed at low tide. Figures scattered across the foreground gather shellfish and seaweed, their small scale emphasizing the sweeping emptiness of the mudflats and the distant horizon. Produced around 1830, the work demonstrates Kuniyoshi's interest in expansive natural settings beyond his more celebrated warrior subjects.
