Description
Hodogaya: Yura Hyōgo, His Wife (Nyōbō) Minato, and Shinozuka Hachirō is a print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, belonging to one of the many series in which leading Edo ukiyo-e designers paired the post stations of the Tōkaidō highway with historical or theatrical figures associated, often loosely, with each place. Hodogaya was the fourth station on the road between Edo and Kyoto, and series of this type were a popular vehicle for combining the topographical interest of station views with the warrior prints and theatrical portraits that made Kuniyoshi's name. The figures named on the sheet, Yura Hyōgo, his wife Minato and Shinozuka Hachirō, belong to the world of historical and dramatic literature, and the design would have allowed Kuniyoshi to bring his characteristic figure work to bear on a station that was otherwise relatively undistinguished topographically. Kuniyoshi trained under Utagawa Toyokuni I and rose to prominence in the late 1820s with his Suikoden series; the Tōkaidō-and-heroes format suited his sensibility perfectly, joining narrative with place. The Victoria and Albert Museum's record preserves the full title of the sheet, the names of its protagonists and its placement within Kuniyoshi's output. The description here adheres to that information, reading the print as a representative example of how a late-Edo Utagawa designer could fold the genre of warrior prints into the visual language of the Tōkaidō series, without speculating beyond what is securely documented in the museum catalogue.
