Description

Inuzuka Shino Moritaka, the central hero of Bakin's Hakkenden, is depicted on the famous Horyukaku rooftop — a crucial scene from the novel in which he fights off multiple attackers while carrying the precious sword Murasame. Kuniyoshi's treatment of this scene, one of his most celebrated Hakkenden compositions, places the lone hero at height against the sky, the elevated setting dramatizing his isolation and the odds against him. The rooftop battle became one of the defining images associated with the novel.
