Description
Iyo Province: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Minamoto no Yoshitsune is an 1852 print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from his series Modern Scenes of the Provinces in Edo Brocades (Edo nishiki imayo kuni zukushi). The series pairs each Japanese province with a kabuki actor in a celebrated role, mapping the imagined geography of the country onto the imagined geography of the Edo theater. Here the great star Ichikawa Danjuro VIII appears as the tragic warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune, whose legendary travels through the provinces, including dramatic events tied to the western seas around Iyo (modern Ehime), made him an apt match for the province. Kuniyoshi, an Edo ukiyo-e artist of the Utagawa school known for warrior prints and theatrical portraiture alike, draws on both traditions in this design: Yoshitsune's warrior identity emerges through armor, weapons, and dynamic stance, while the actor identity surfaces through facial likeness and theatrical costume. A cartouche identifies the province, the role, and often a vignette or poem situating the figure geographically. Published in 1852, the print also benefits from the heightened technical sophistication of mid-century color woodblock printing, with detailed color separations, ground patterns, and thin line work. The Art Institute of Chicago preserves this impression (artworks/130731) within its collection of nineteenth-century Japanese prints. The sheet illustrates how Kuniyoshi's late-career production drew together regional, historical, and theatrical themes into single visually unified images.
