A formal shini-e mourning print for Iwai Hanshiro VI, issued in the fourth month of 1836 shortly after the famous onnagata's death. Hanshiro VI was celebrated for his portrayals of noblewomen and high-ranking courtesans in the grand onnagata tradition, his grace and bearing defining feminine elegance for generations of kabuki audiences. Kuniyoshi's memorial portrait, printed on quality nishiki-e polychrome paper appropriate for such commemorations, captures the actor in one of his signature female roles.
