Printed in 1942 when Saito was still developing the bold flat planes and simplified contours that would become his signature, this childhood portrait shows an early but already decisive formal instinct. The girl's head—rendered in close-up, the features concentrated and still—carries the weight of an icon rather than a snapshot. Even at this stage Saito was more interested in the essential form of a face than in psychological nuance, treating childhood as a condition of pure, unguarded presence.
