The Shin-Yoshiwara pleasure quarter — relocated from its original site after a fire — was among the most distinctive and visually spectacular urban spaces in Edo, its great gate and the processions of courtesans creating a world apart. Kuniyoshi's early 1830s depiction for the Famous Places in the Eastern Capital series captures the quarter's architecture and evening atmosphere, the lanterns and figures conveying the particular quality of the licensed district's manufactured glamour. The subject was both topographic document and meditation on Edo's most celebrated social institution.
