Description
Night Attack of the 47 Ronin, dated 1851 in the records of the Victoria and Albert Museum, is a late warrior print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) depicting one of the most enduring narratives in Edo culture: the loyal vassals of Asano Naganori's house breaking into the Edo residence of Kira Yoshinaka in 1703 to avenge their lord's enforced suicide. The story of the 47 ronin had been transformed almost immediately into popular drama, most famously the play Kanadehon Chūshingura, and became one of the central subjects of Edo ukiyo-e, especially of warrior prints. Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) returned to the theme many times across his career, producing multiple series in which the loyal retainers were depicted individually, in groups and within the larger narrative arc of the attack. The 1851 date places this sheet near the height of his mature career, in a period when his line, palette and command of compositional drama were at their fullest. Trained under Utagawa Toyokuni I, Kuniyoshi had risen to prominence in the late 1820s with the Suikoden warrior series; the Chūshingura attack is in many ways the natural companion subject within his Edo ukiyo-e world, transferring the same vocabulary of heroic action and group composition from Chinese to Japanese settings. The Victoria and Albert Museum's catalogue records the title, date and Kuniyoshi attribution, situating the work within its substantial holdings of his prints. The description here follows that documentation and treats the sheet as a representative example of Kuniyoshi's contribution to the deeply rooted Chūshingura tradition of warrior prints.
