A night scene aboard a pleasure boat (yakatabune) on the Sumida River captures the leisured entertainments available to prosperous Edo citizens — music, food, geisha performance, and the river's breezes carrying sounds across dark water. This shikishiban surimono diptych (c. 1830s), produced in luxury format, conveys the private world of such evenings with the restrained elegance appropriate to objects made for refined collecting. The nocturnal setting allowed Kuniyoshi to work with lantern light and river reflections.
