Description
This 1839 yakusha-e (actor print) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi pairs Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Goshaku Somegoro with Onoe Kikugoro III as Denkichi Tsuchizaemon in an inset format. Although Kuniyoshi is best remembered for his warrior prints, his work for the Edo theater world was substantial and commercially important, and prints like this one document specific kabuki productions of the late 1830s. Goshaku Somegoro is a stock character type associated with otokodate, the dashing commoner heroes who featured prominently in Edo townsmen's drama, and Onoe Kikugoro III was one of the foremost actors of his generation, celebrated for both male and female roles. The inset composition allows Kuniyoshi to juxtapose the two figures within a framing device, creating a visual dialogue between the characters and demonstrating the print's function as a souvenir of theatrical performance. As Edo ukiyo-e, the print operates within an established commercial ecosystem in which publishers, designers, and theaters collaborated to produce images that fans collected and traded. Kuniyoshi's draftsmanship gives weight to costume details, hairstyles, and the calibrated facial expressions associated with each role. The print's color block printing employs the standard nishiki-e palette of the Tenpo era, with attention to the patterns of fabric that signaled status and character. This impression is preserved in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it contributes to the museum's documentation of Kuniyoshi's role within the kabuki publishing world of Edo.
