Description
The Battle of the Uji River (circa 1849) is a vivid Edo ukiyo-e composition by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting one of the most celebrated episodes of the late twelfth-century Genpei War. The clash at the Uji River, set just south of Kyoto, became a defining encounter in the conflict between the Minamoto and Taira clans, and was best remembered for the rivalry between Sasaki no Shirō Takatsuna and Kajiwara Genda Kagesue as they raced across the swollen river on horseback to claim the honor of first attack. Kuniyoshi, whose career was built on warrior prints, returns repeatedly to this scene over his career and treats it here with the dynamic compositional energy that defined his approach to musha-e. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the surging diagonals of horses and riders against the rushing current, with armor details, banners, and water patterning drawn in the brisk linear vocabulary of late-Edo printmaking. The subject was politically permissible under the Tenpō reforms because it derived from premodern military history rather than contemporary kabuki or courtesan culture, allowing publishers to issue ambitious multi-sheet warrior prints throughout the 1840s. Kuniyoshi's command of equine anatomy and turbulent water—skills he had honed since the breakthrough 108 Heroes of the Suikoden series of the late 1820s—gives the scene its momentum, while careful color blocking distinguishes the rival clans. The print confirms Utagawa Kuniyoshi's stature as the foremost designer of warrior prints in his generation and his ability to translate canonical military narratives into theatrical Edo ukiyo-e compositions.
