Description

The Ide Jewel River in Yamashiro Province belongs to an untitled series by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from around 1842 depicting the Six Jewel Rivers (Mu-Tamagawa), a classical poetic topos in which six famous rivers across Japan named Tamagawa are paired with seasonal and literary associations. The Ide Jewel River in Yamashiro Province was associated with the yamabuki, the kerria flower, and with the song of the kawazu (frog), an evocation drawn from classical waka poetry. Kuniyoshi, who built his reputation on warrior prints, here demonstrates his versatility within Edo ukiyo-e by entering the bijin and meisho-e (famous places) traditions long dominated by other Utagawa-school designers. The composition typically integrates a beautiful woman or seasonal figure in the foreground with a landscape evoking the river's literary associations behind. The classical Mu-Tamagawa subject had been treated by ukiyo-e masters for nearly a century, and Kuniyoshi participates in this lineage with his characteristic feeling for line and color. The early 1840s saw Kuniyoshi adjusting his output in response to the Tenpo Reforms, which restricted certain courtesan and actor subjects and may have encouraged him toward classical literary themes that could pass official scrutiny. As a color woodblock print of the period, it employs careful registration to achieve the layered seasonal palette of the genre. This impression is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
