Description

The Utter Defeat of the Taira Clan in the Great Genpei War at Akama Bay in Nagato Province (1840) stands among Utagawa Kuniyoshi's most ambitious warrior prints, depicting the climactic naval engagement at the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185. The battle, fought in the straits between Honshu and Kyushu, ended the Genpei War and the Taira (Heike) clan with the drowning of the child emperor Antoku and the suicide of much of the surviving Taira leadership. Kuniyoshi, who built his reputation on the warrior subjects of medieval epic, mobilizes the full scale of the triptych or larger horizontal format to present the chaos of vessels, plunging warriors, and roiling waves. The Tale of the Heike, the foundational chronicle of the war, was source material that Kuniyoshi returned to repeatedly throughout his career, finding in it the dramatic concentration of loyalty, defeat, and pathos that suited his graphic imagination. As Edo ukiyo-e, the print mediates the medieval narrative through the visual conventions of nishiki-e: brilliant clan colors, identifiable family crests on banners, and the dynamic figure poses that became Kuniyoshi's signature. The composition would have appealed to an audience steeped in the literary and dramatic traditions surrounding the Genpei conflict, and to collectors who prized Kuniyoshi above all for these warrior subjects (musha-e). This impression in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago documents the artist's mature handling of large-scale historical battle scenes during the Tenpo era.
