Description
Yellow (Ki) belongs to Utagawa Kuniyoshi's series Lord Teika's Poetry Contest (Teika-kyō utaawase), a designer's conceit that wraps a contemporary ukiyo-e image around the classical reputation of Fujiwara no Teika (1162–1241), the great medieval poet and editor of the Hyakunin isshu. Utaawase—formal poetry competitions in which paired verses were judged for technical and emotive quality—were a touchstone of court culture, and Kuniyoshi's series adopts that framework as a vehicle for mitate (visual analogy), pairing a poem with a contemporary scene or figure. The sheet keyed to ki (yellow) participates in a chromatic logic across the series, in which color words function both as poetic prompt and as a cue for the print's dominant palette. As an Edo ukiyo-e print of the mid-nineteenth century, the design demonstrates Kuniyoshi's literary sophistication beyond the warrior prints for which he is best known: the cartouche text, the figure, and the surrounding decorative scheme are calibrated so that the educated viewer reads each level as comment on the others. The Harvard Art Museums record the impression without firm year; the series is consistent with Kuniyoshi's late Tenpō and Kōka–Kaei output. The sheet documents the integration of waka (classical poetry) into the popular print market. Source: Harvard Art Museums (object 210029).
