Description
A landscape from the Eight Views of Omi Hakkei depicting the Sunset at Awazu (Awazu no sekisho), one of the canonical eight pairings in which the place Awazu, on the southern shore of Lake Biwa, is matched with the atmospheric effect of evening glow. The Awazu site was famous for its pine grove, and Toyohiro's composition foregrounds the grove against the lake, with the sun's last light reduced to gradations of color along the horizon. The treatment exemplifies the restrained, atmospheric handling that distinguishes Toyohiro's landscape practice and that would be inherited and amplified by Hiroshige a generation later. The print is held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
