$1,000–$10,000. Common bird/flower prints: $1,000–$3,000. Key value factors: Watanabe Seitei's kacho-e prints have seen increased market interest. His work influenced both Japanese and Western artists.
A 1916 woodblock print depicting a riverside scene, a subject that allowed Watanabe Seitei to explore reflections, flowing water, and the plant and animal life that gathers along waterways. Seitei was renowned for his naturalistic depictions of birds and flowers, and a riverside setting offered rich material for that specialty. Willows trailing into the current, herons wading in the shallows, and insects hovering above the surface are all elements Seitei might have woven into this composition. The 1916 date places the work in the Taisho era, when Seitei was an established master bridging Meiji-era painting traditions and the emerging shin hanga movement.
