Description

Slieve Foye is the mountain that rises directly above Carlingford on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, where Akino has lived for many years; it is one of the recurring subjects of her Irish topographical prints. The title describes a specific atmospheric moment — a moon visible at morning over the ridgeline — and the image is rendered in pure etching, without aquatint tonal fields or applied gold leaf. Etching alone produces the print through bitten line, which Akino tends to work closely and rhythmically to suggest contour, weather and water. Within her wider body of work the print sits with her other named-place Irish landscapes (Errigal, Donn's Garden, Cliara, Scariff and Deenish, the Dursey Island view), forming a sustained record of the western and northern Irish coastal landscape made by an artist trained in Kyoto and working out of Graphic Studio Dublin.
