$300–$3,000. Fish prints are among this artist's most collected works. Good stencil prints: $800–$1,500. Key value factors: Mori's cheerful folk art prints are affordably priced. His stencil technique (kappazuri) is distinctive.
Fishmonger presents the street fish seller — one of the fundamental figures of old Tokyo's commercial street life — with the vivid detail and social observation that characterized Mori's genre subjects. The fishmonger's stall, with its displayed catch laid out on ice or straw, the seller's calls to passing customers, and the visual abundance of fresh seafood created a scene simultaneously domestic and dramatic. In the shitamachi tradition, the fishmonger was a familiar and beloved figure, his daily rounds as much a part of the neighborhood's rhythm as the temple bell.
