May — Boy's Festival (Tango no Sekku) presents the celebration of the fifth day of the fifth month, when families with sons hung carp streamers (koinobori) from tall poles and displayed armor, helmets, and warrior figures within the house to encourage martial virtue in their male children. The carp streamers — one for each son in the household, swimming in the breeze above the rooftop — were among the most visually striking seasonal decorations in the Japanese calendar, and their combination with the warrior imagery of the indoor display gave Mori a subject of considerable decorative richness.
