November — Rake Market on the Day of Rooster presents the Tori no Ichi festival at Otori shrines across Japan — the market held on the "day of the rooster" in November where kumade (bamboo rakes decorated with good-luck ornaments) were sold as charms for raking in wealth and good fortune in the coming year. The kumade stalls, with their elaborately decorated rakes festooned with miniature masks, coins, and symbolic objects, created one of the most visually extravagant of all the year's market festivals, and the rooster associations added additional festive iconography to an already image-rich occasion.
