下平屋村
Shimohiraya Village (下平屋村) refers to a rural settlement, likely in Gifu or Nagano Prefecture, in the mountain interior of central Honshu. Katsuda's silkscreen probably depicts traditional farmhouses—possibly gassho-zukuri structures with steep thatched roofs—set within an agricultural or forested landscape. The serigraph medium allows the crisp geometric forms of vernacular architecture to be rendered as flat color planes, with rooflines and wall surfaces defined by clean edges rather than expressive brushwork. The numbered series context suggests this is one of many village studies documenting rural Japan, reflecting a broader mid-to-late twentieth-century interest in preserving the visual record of disappearing traditional settlements.
