Description
A woodblock print depicting the Osaka Municipal Office, the seat of the city's government and a prominent piece of early twentieth-century architecture. Akamatsu Rinsaku turns his eye from Osaka's bridges and entertainment districts to its civic infrastructure, recording the imposing facade of the municipal building with the same care he brings to more picturesque subjects. The choice of a government building as a print subject reflects the shin hanga and sosaku hanga interest in documenting the full fabric of modern Japanese life, not only temples and gardens but also the institutions and structures that shaped daily existence in a rapidly industrializing city.
