Description

Fossil 16, a color woodblock from 1970, edition 10 of 60, explores geological and paleontological subject matter through abstract composition. Fossils carry a powerful temporal message: the preserved traces of ancient life forms, their exact shapes captured in stone over millions of years, suggest both the fragility of living things and the permanence of their material traces. Amano's geometric abstraction applied to fossil forms would have created compositions that emphasize the shapes of ancient creatures within the rectangular regularity of the stone matrix.
