Description
Morning Moon 23 is the twenty-third print in Amano's extensive series meditating on the waning moon visible at dawn. Within the series, each numbered work represents a distinct compositional and chromatic study within a consistent formal framework. At this point in the sequence, Amano would have established a refined shorthand: the moon as geometric disc or crescent, the sky rendered in stacked horizontal color fields, and the ground or water as a contrasting lower register. The print's moonlight subject — noted in its recorded subjects — suggests that the luminous quality of the moon against early morning sky receives particular attention here, perhaps through a higher-keyed palette or a larger lunar form relative to the picture plane. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradients likely soften the sky zones, describing the diffuse quality of pre-dawn light around the visible moon.
