Description
Nostalgia 2 is the second variation in Amano's meditation on the feeling of nostalgic longing — natsukashii, a word in Japanese that refers to the warm, sweet sadness of memories of the past. As a self-taught artist born in 1929 in northern Japan, Amano's nostalgia likely encompasses memories of Hirosaki, of childhood landscapes of rice fields and mountains, of the natural world before Japan's rapid postwar modernization transformed both the physical environment and social fabric of his youth.
