Description
This kacho-e by Aoyama Masaharu depicts seagulls (kamome) — likely the black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris) or common black-headed gull, both characteristic of Japan's coastlines — in a composition that exploits the birds' strong graphic form. The gull's angular wing silhouette, white body plumage, and contrasting dark wingtips make it a subject well suited to woodblock's capacity for clean edge definition. The composition likely captures the birds in flight, their wing spans providing diagonal movement across the picture plane against a sea or sky background. Rendering white plumage in woodblock required careful management of the washi's natural ground color, with grey shading applied selectively to model wing surfaces without deadening the birds' inherent brightness. The water or sky behind would be rendered through bokashi gradation, creating atmospheric depth. The Japanese title in katakana (カモメ) and the numeral designation suggest this is the first in a series of seagull prints by Aoyama, with at least one further composition on the same subject produced under the same edition.
