Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
A second untitled work by Aoyama Masaharu (1893–1969). His [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) practice — which he developed after studying traditional ink painting and working at the Imperial Household Museum — produced prints of exceptional technical quality across subjects including birds, architecture, rural life, and the natural world. The early retirement from institutional employment that allowed him to focus on printmaking gave his career an unusual purity of artistic purpose: each work a direct expression of personal vision rather than institutional commission.
