Kyoto's traditional tile rooftops extend across the composition in this 1996 print, Karhu's disciplined eye organizing the mass of interlocking grey forms into a rhythmic pattern that alternates between dark shadow and warm light. "Afternoon Roofs" represents the mature phase of his career, when the rooftop had become his signature subject — not merely as an architectural document but as a formal problem about the interaction of geometry, light, and the accumulated depth of an ancient city.
