Kyoto's traditional tile rooftops extend across the composition in this 1996 print, Karhu's disciplined eye organizing the mass of interlocking grey forms into a rhythmic pattern that alternates between dark shadow and warm light. "Afternoon Roofs" represents the mature phase of his career, when the rooftop had become his signature subject — not merely as an architectural document but as a formal problem about the interaction of geometry, light, and the accumulated depth of an ancient city. The aerial perspective flattens the scene into something close to abstraction while remaining completely concrete.
