Description
"Hashi-Hime" (The Maiden of the Bridge) is Chapter 45 of The Tale of Genji, the opening of the celebrated Uji chapters in which Prince Kaoru discovers the daughters of Prince Hachi living in remote retirement at Uji on the Uji River. The "bridge maiden" of the title refers to the spirit believed to inhabit Uji Bridge, and to the eldest daughter Oigimi, as elusive and melancholy as a supernatural figure. Ebina's print captures the haunting atmosphere of the Uji setting — the mist on the river, the sense of a world apart from the capital, the quality of beauty tinged with sadness.
