Description
White Dream inverts the typical approach to woodblock color by centering the composition on absence of pigment — on the luminous, open surface of washi itself. Dreams as subject allow Fukita maximal interpretive latitude: forms may be indistinct, boundaries dissolved, compositional logic non-sequential. The white ground, achieved through restraint in inking rather than addition of white pigment, functions as positive space rather than mere background. Colored forms — warm or cool, geometric or fluid — may emerge from this ground as partial or fragmentary presences, as if recalled rather than seen. This treatment reflects the sosaku-hanga artist's control over every stage of production, including the deliberate choice of what not to print.
