Description
Grove of Trees (Rin) is among the most direct expressions of Fujita's central preoccupation: the compression and geometry of densely grown trees observed as a collective form rather than as individual specimens. The Japanese title Rin (林) denotes a grove or copse distinct from a full forest (mori, 森), implying a human-scale stand of trees rather than an overwhelming wilderness. Fujita likely constructs the composition from vertical passages of tone — bark, shadow, filtered light — using multiple woodblocks to layer color across the [washi](/glossary/washi) surface. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations along the edges of trunks suggest atmospheric moisture and the quality of diffuse light penetrating a closed canopy. The bilingual titling reflects the print's presentation for both Japanese and international audiences.
