Description
Kinkaku-ji, the gold-leafed Rokuon-ji pavilion in northwest Kyoto rebuilt in 1955 after the 1950 arson, is among the densest visual subjects in Japanese landscape printmaking. Kitaoka's spring treatment likely sets the gilded structure against the mirror pond (Kyōko-chi), with cherry blossom or fresh foliage providing the seasonal register. The compositional challenge of the subject is the contrast between the high-key reflective gold of the pavilion and the cooler greens and pinks of the spring garden — a contrast that mokuhanga handles through metallic pigment or yellow-ochre passages built up over multiple impressions, set against [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) water surfaces. As a Kyoto-architecture print, this places Kitaoka in dialogue with [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) predecessors who worked the same site, but his treatment is structurally flatter and more diagrammatic, in keeping with his [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) commitment to the print as designed object rather than transcribed view. Spring at Kinkaku-ji is a [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) subject in lineage but a modernist pictorial problem in his hands.
