Description

A village set among hills experiences the particular quality of spring — the blossom and new growth visible even in a settled, agricultural landscape — in this composition that combines two of Kitaoka's recurring subjects. The spring village is a subject with deep roots in Japanese landscape art, the seasonal renewal of nature reflected in the human settlement embedded within it. Kitaoka gives it a modernist treatment: the hillside village rendered in bold, simplified geometry, the spring foliage a mass of fresh color against the more muted tones of the built environment.
