Description

A solitary traveler rests — perhaps sitting at the roadside, or pausing at an inn — in one of Kitaoka's sympathetic figurative studies of people in transit. The traveler at rest occupies the interstitial time and space of travel: neither at origin nor destination, suspended between one world and another. Kitaoka brought to such subjects the same attentiveness he gave to landscape, understanding that a figure in rest carries as much visual and human content as a figure in motion.
