Description
An open-water view — the sea or perhaps a large lake, rendered from a position that eliminates the immediate foreground to emphasize the expanse of water and the horizon — is handled here with Kitaoka's characteristic restraint. The ocean view without a framing shore or landmark places the viewer directly in relationship with the water's vast horizontal plane, the compositional task being to make this simple, repeated element interesting through the quality of light, the character of the surface, and the precision of the horizon line.
