A surging swell of water fills the composition, Kitaoka stripping the sea down to its most primal architectural logic: curving planes of force, the compressed white of breaking foam, a darkened trough. Where Hokusai dramatized the wave through minutely observed turbulence, Kitaoka finds its essence in bold, near-geometric masses. The result is less a record of a specific seascape than a distillation of energy itself — the woodblock's capacity for strong, clean line and flat field of color made to serve an almost purely abstract end.
