Murmur renders the quietest of sounds — a low, continuous, slightly indistinct vocalization or the sound of water over small stones — in visual abstract terms. For Yamaguchi, who consistently translated sensory and psychological experiences into woodblock composition, the murmur would become a formal quality: something soft and pervasive rather than sharp and clear, something that communicates without fully articulating, that is present without demanding full attention. The visual equivalent might be a composition of soft edges, muted colors, and gentle rhythms.
