Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony — chado or sado, the "way of tea" — is one of Japan's most codified aesthetic practices, where the preparation and consumption of powdered green tea becomes a discipline of spatial arrangement, seasonal awareness, and social harmony. Yamaguchi's woodblock treatment of this subject might depict the tea bowl, the whisk, and the ladle in abstract arrangement, or it might capture the spatial relationships of the tea room — the tokonoma with its scroll and flower, the guests in their arranged positions — as a compositional problem.
