A Different Shade of Red

An abstract composition divided into three horizontal bands of flat color — soft gray above, white in the middle, muted sage green below — with four irregular oval forms floating along the white middle band: a brown oval at left, a pale cream oval and a small orange-red oval overlapping at center, and a light blue oval at right. The edges between bands are painted with an uneven, hand-drawn wobble rather than straight lines, giving the flat fields a soft, textured boundary. Pencil annotations in the lower margin mark the edition number and title in Japanese alongside the artist's signature and date; this woodblock print by Gen Yamanaka is dated 2008 and titled "A Different Shade of Red."
