Four Places

Four Places (2002), by Gen Yamanaka, is a small acrylic-on-wood panel divided into four quadrants: a slate-blue square upper left, a rust-red square upper right, and two off-white squares below, each inscribed with a faint, sketch-like outline resembling a narrow archway or standing form. The panel is mounted at the center of a large fabric mat within a pale wood frame, leaving broad empty space around the small painted surface. The palette is muted and restrained, with a quiet, spare mood created by the geometric division and the sparse linear drawing within the lower two fields.
