Fashion Society

Fashion Society (1980), acrylic and oil on canvas by Go Yayanagi, is divided into a six-panel grid of bold, flat color blocks in purple, yellow, black, pink, and sky blue. The two upper corner panels contain dense, surreal collages of stylized figures and animal forms — striped zebra-patterned heads, a green-plumed bird, a coiled shell, a pink flower, and a profiled human head — rendered in thick black outlines with saturated red, green, and blue fills, while the central panels focus on a nude pink human torso seen from behind against black. The lower register shows three narrower panels with simpler forms in pink, blue, and brown against solid color grounds, continuing the same graphic, hard-edged style with no shading or gradients.
