Description
Weeping Cherry 27 belongs to Namiki's sustained numbered series on the shidarezakura, the cascading cherry. The composition typical of this series places a single tree against a softly graduated ground, with the long trailing branches articulated through carved line work and the blossoms built up across multiple color blocks. Namiki prints by hand on handmade [washi](/glossary/washi) using water-based pigments and a [baren](/glossary/baren), producing the matte, paper-forward surface that distinguishes contemporary mokuhanga from oil-based printing techniques. The graduated background relies on [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi), the practice of dragging or wiping pigment across the block before impression so that color shifts smoothly across the sheet. Working in the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) tradition, Namiki acts as designer, carver, and printer, controlling each stage of production. Weeping Cherry 27 sits late in this particular numerical arc, and within the broader catalogue of weeping-cherry subjects it represents one further refinement of a motif Namiki has returned to repeatedly, alongside his Tree Scene and dogwood sequences.
