Description
This print commemorates Tango no Sekku, the traditional Boys' Day festival observed on the fifth day of the fifth month, in which families displayed samurai helmets, armor, and carp streamers to wish sons strength and success. The composition centers on a young child wearing or seated beside an oversized kabuto, the lacquered helmet associated with warrior culture. The scale contrast between the small figure and the imposing helmet is a familiar device in festival imagery, emphasizing innocence and aspiration. Sadanobu III likely rendered the helmet's lacquered surfaces using dense, flat color blocks, while the child's clothing would provide an opportunity for decorative pattern work. The print belongs to a long Osaka tradition of seasonal and celebratory imagery.
