Description
This print depicts a young Japanese woman or girl set against the backdrop of Nikko, the celebrated shrine and temple complex in Tochigi Prefecture renowned for its elaborate lacquerwork, gilded carvings, and cedar-forested mountain setting. Hyde likely frames the figure in traditional dress — possibly a kimono with seasonal patterning — using the landscape as both context and compositional foil. Her characteristic [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations would soften the background while the figure is rendered with the precise line work she developed under her Japanese instructors. The subject reflects Hyde's sustained interest in the intimate lives of Japanese women, here situated within one of Meiji Japan's most frequented pilgrimage destinations.
