Fantasy in White renders a composition in which white itself is the subject — not the white of snow or blossoms or paper, but white as a color with its own internal range of temperature, texture, and luminosity. Hagiwara's carved surfaces, which could make the printed white appear either flat or dimensional, became particularly expressive in these white compositions where the marks of the cutting tool provided the only structural information in an otherwise uniform field. The "Fantasy" framing allowed the image to be received as vision rather than observation.
