$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
As Darkness Leaves (1990–91) belongs to Hagiwara's mature series exploring the transitional states of light — dawn, dusk, the moment when one quality of illumination yields to another. The title describes the dissolution of night rather than the arrival of morning, focusing on the negative space of the darkness as it retreats rather than the positive fact of the approaching light. Hagiwara's carved surfaces, which could suggest both the texture of darkness and the grain of light, were ideally suited to such transitional subjects.
