Description

Playground (without number or parenthetical) represents one of Hagiwara's treatments of the childhood play environment in its most generalized form — the space of play rather than a specific playground configuration. The sosaku-hanga tradition's emphasis on the artist's personal vision over documentary accuracy gave Hagiwara permission to render the playground as felt experience rather than observed fact, the spatial qualities of openness, freedom, and structured risk that define the best play environments translated into the abstract visual language of his carved surfaces.
