Description
Sunset Glow at Ishiyama renders the rock and temple at Ishiyama on Lake Biwa's southern shore in the warm orange and crimson light of the setting sun — the stone outcrop of coarse granitic rock that gave Ishiyamadera its name glowing with unusual intensity in the last directional light of the day. Hagiwara's treatment of the sunset at this location, historically associated with both Buddhist devotion and the composition of The Tale of Genji, layered the visual drama of the light on the stone with the deep cultural meanings accumulated over more than a millennium of artistic and literary attention to this site.
